I went to my first Australasian Congress way back in 1980 in Adelaide and would go to one every three to four years, but the fees to attend began to get astronomical and once I retired, could no longer afford it. I think the problem was that the big professional event organisers charged as they would for a business conference. Granted there were usually a few overseas experts and I realise they would cost a bit and the venues were pretty swish, too. Nowadays I go to the State conferences - affordable and just as enjoyable if not more so as they have a friendly and down-to-earth welcome. The smaller local expo days are just as much fun and informative, too, as you learn the latest resources becoming available and you meet old acquaintances from neighbouring societies.
